Summer might be ending soon, but grilling never goes out of season! Take part in an American pastime by grilling up some burgers this weekend. We’ve got you covered with these hacks to make your burger even more healthy and delicious!

The Patty

Burgers are an American staple- however that doesn’t mean that the high cholesterol and processed beef is great for you. These protein choices are typically loaded with saturated fat and sodium. However, meat is full of heme iron, which is absorbed better in your body than non-heme (found mostly in plant sources). All in all, grilling meat is also a pretty healthy cooking method. If you’re subbing in the fish change it up by grilling salmon
burgers! Salmon burgers can be just as tasty, but are full of heart healthy fats, lower in calories and cholesterol. You can either make your own or find a good option using ShopWell.

If you’re not a huge meat eater or have high cholesterol, try out a black bean burger. It’s a flavorful way to still enjoy a burger guilt-free (don’t knock it till you try it!), and beans are naturally cholesterol-free. Even better, they’re full of cholesterol-absorbing fiber, which helps you out while filling you up. The Toppings

If you’re lactose intolerant, you shouldn’t feel left out if you have to pass on that strip of cheese for your burger. We’ve come up with some great combos (you can add your own twists to too) that’ll make you forget they’re cheese-less. Whether or not you are a cheese connoisseur, you won’t want to miss out on these combos:
